This week: INVESTMENT LEADERS GROUP

There are some fantastic organisations and individuals who are producing valuable research in sustainable finance. Altiorem summarises and curates this research to assist those who want to build the case for sustainability.

We will showcase these organisations by providing a snapshot of who they are, what they do and any achievements or initiatives they have accomplished relevant to sustainable finance.

This week, the spotlight is on Investment Leaders Group, a project conceived by the University of Cambridge and Natixis Asset Management.

Investment Leaders Group (ILG) is a project to help shift the investment chain towards responsible, long-term value creation.

Overview

ILG began in 2013 with the belief that responsibility should be at the heart of the investment process in order to best serve clients and beneficiaries. The organisation comprises 11 investment institutions with over US$12 trillion under management and advice. It is a voluntary initiative, driven by its members, facilitated by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.

Members co-develop tools and solutions to existing market barriers. In this way, members can pilot test research and put new thinking into practice ahead of the rest of the market.

ILG have selected numerous areas for development including measuring investment impacts; promoting long-termism; understanding consumer preferences and behaviours; and climate risk and resilience.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is a globally influential institute developing leadership and solutions for a sustainable economy. For nearly 30 years, CISL has worked with business, government and finance leaders worldwide to shape their leadership journey. Their work has led to the creation of a leadership network made up of almost 8,000 senior leaders and leading practitioners who represent business, the public sector and civil society in every industry and on every continent.

Achievements

  1. Developing a Virtual Investment Experiment which tests investor preferences as to how they trade off financial performance against impact.
  2. Developed a set of impact metrics that translate the Sustainable Development Goals into measurable indicators that can be calculable, easily understood and implementable by investors.
  3. Developed a toolkit for investors who wish to design investment mandates that can help shift the investment chain towards responsible, long-term value creation.
  4. Developed a model that quantifies the impact of potential climate and energy regulation on company profitability.
